National Coming Out Day: October 11, 2023

Celebrated annually on October 11th, this day commemorates the journey of self-discovery and the courage it takes to openly embrace one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression. This observance traces its roots back to 1988, when Jean O’Leary and Dr. Robert Eichberg chose this date to coincide with the first anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. National Coming Out Day now stands as a beacon of support and acknowledgement for those who have bravely shared their authentic selves with the world. It is also a reminder that many individuals within LGBTQIA+ communities face ongoing challenges in the journey towards self-expression.

As we reflect on the history and significance of the day, we invite you to explore the resources we have curated for a deeper understanding of this journey.

  • Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art | WE ARE KIND OF MORE: Gen Z Reframes Gender and Sexuality

    • This virtual exhibition uses photography and oral history to share stories of religion, family, and community that LGBTQ+ CUNY students have found in NYC. This show originally opened at LaGuardia in June 2019 during the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Queer New York

    • This virtual walking tour, created by the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project and the Met, documents historic places in New York City connected to several queer artists in the Museum’s collection.

  • It Gets Better Project | Stories

    • Through diverse and uplifting narratives, It Gets Better provides a platform for sharing personal stories and messages of hope for LGBTQ+ youth. The organization strives to inspire strength and confidence in navigating the journey to self-acceptance and a brighter future.

NYU’s LGBTQ+ Center offers an array of resources for members of LGBTQIA+ communities, and those interested in learning more and becoming allies to fellow community members.
