It is with great sadness that we share the news that John Conklin passed away on June 24, 2025 at Glimmerglass Opera. He died doing what he loved: making extraordinary opera at a theater that held deep meaning for him.
John was not only a celebrated designer but also a beloved educator and mentor. At NYU, he taught in the Department of Design for Stage and Film for over thirty years (from 1982 until 2021 with a pause around 1994), where he inspired generations of designers with his passion, intellect, and generosity.
His contributions helped launch countless careers and shaped the artistic voices of many.
