Former HFPA grant recipient Karl McCool at the Museum of Modern Art's Film Preservation Center in Hamlin, PA, Summer 2014
The Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program in the Department of Cinema Studies has received a $18,000 grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as a continuation of a successful partnership to support graduate student internships at public and private organizations which are dedicated to the preservation, study, exhibition, and distribution of classic Hollywood films and other theatrical production. The grant will support two internship placements over the course of a year.
HFPA internships will connect the students to a variety of practices, exposing them to diverse environments and business models for restoring, preserving, and providing mainstream access to some of our nation’s most vulnerable films, thus preparing the students for future positions with private sector companies and public institutions. Past placements have included the Filmmakers Coop, New York Public Library, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of the Moving Image, New York Women in Film and Television, and Milestone Films.
The M.A. in Moving Image Archiving is an interdisciplinary course of study that combines the humanities with sciences and engineering to train students in every aspect of moving image archiving and preservation. The program teaches students how to handle film, video, digital, and new media in all types of environments and contexts, and ensures constant exposure to real world experiences through class projects and internships.
