Amal Ahmed, NYU Division of Libraries, Fall 2020

During my internship at the Indigenous Media Collection at the NYU Division of Libraries I was able to experience working with unique and under-represented forms of filmmaking. I learned about how NYU Libraries is integrating native protocols into their collecting workflow. I was able to learn and connect with past staff, students, Indigenous community members and filmmakers. This was through creating a presentation for the NYU Libraries Donors and Alumni community. This improved my public programming and outreach skills.

My main task was to create a workflow that will integrate the inventory and the copyright permissions of this collection. In addition, I learnt a lot about the role of the copyright law injunction with Indigenous media. I was also able to get a LibGuides orientation on accessibility training. I am grateful for this internship because I gained insight into how the traditional roles of an archive and library need to be reevaluated when working with Indigenous collections.
