Robert Hoffman, GBH Boston & WBGO Newark, Fall 2020, NEH

The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) is a GBH program affiliated with the Library of Congress, whose mission is to preserve media created by public broadcasting stations. My internship began with me building an online Special Collection from AABP materials. Due to my proximity to Newark, the second half of my internship shifted to WBGO, which is working with GBH and the AAPB in preserving their audio recordings. WBGO is an excellent example of a production archive, where the collection content was produced on-site instead of being independently collected. Founded in 1979, Newark Public Radio WBGO Jazz88.3FM holds multiple audio formats from decades of being on-air. I completed a box-level inventory of the Digital Audio Tape (DAT) for the station's application for a Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) grant. I also assisted in writing the application sections regarding the storage and physical condition of the tapes.
