The Media Preservation department within the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Department at NYU'S library, provides care for the library’s film, video and audio materials through methods of inspecting, rehousing, and digitizing. The department specializes in caring for 35mm, 16mm, 8mm and Super 8mm films– with this effort in analog film preservation led by Joanna Poses, who was one of my two primary supervisors, along with Michael Grant, during the internship. Working primarily with the Tamiment Library & Wagner Labor Archive's 16mm film collection, I reported on the detailed condition of film reels, replaced deteriorating splices, and rehoused the collection onto new cores and into well ventilated cans. Within the larger collection, my work focused on the preservation of film documentation pertaining to the Transit Workers Union of America. Additionally, I began working on the process of digitizing a series of filmstrips within the collection, using the lab's film scanner.
