For the 2025 spring semester, I completed my internship at StoryCorps. In my time at StoryCorps, my main internship project was assessing and migrating their Digital Audio Tape, DAT, collection. Comprising over 2000 tapes, the Sound Portraits Productions DAT collection contain a variety of segments once broadcasted on NPR, interviews, music, and other materials produced by Sound Portraits Productions. Testing my listening skills, my daily work process involved reviewing the contents of each tape, assessing physical condition, cataloging and recording any relevant metadata, and creating new digital files. Working with the collection, my understanding of and technical experience with audio improved greatly.
Overall, I really appreciated the change to make impactful progress on such a unique collection with my internship. Everyday was filled with something new and I loved the opportunity to hear from so many different perspectives and communities, broadening my knowledge.
