Cornell University Library

During the summer internship at Cornell I gained experience with digitizing magnetic media and the fundamentals of digital preservation. I was able to work with several forms of magnetic media and learn how they needed to be formatted to conform to the department's standards. While learning to digitize, I became familiar with the pre-existing documentation and helped identify several difficult to follow instructions, I also gained a better understanding of their patch bay and what each machine was used for.

A day each week was dedicated to learning a different skill needed for digital preservation. These came in the form of online courses, other tutorials, and projects that tied the information in the tutorial to the materials we were digitizing or a problem we were facing. This resulted in a better understanding of certain technical skills and how they relate to real world applications that would have been very difficult to lean on my own or in a different setting.
