Arts Politics Student Co-Curating Photography Exhibition at the African American Museum in Philadelphia

Current Arts Politics graduate student, Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, is co-curating an exhibition to open at the African American Museum in Philadelphia on October 4, 2019. The exhibition entitled, In Conversation: Visual Meditations on Black Masculinity, explores the constructs of Blackness and masculinity through the lens of 54 Black women and non-binary photographers. The exhibition features the works of Dr. Deborah Willis, Chair, Department of Photography & Imaging and alumna Zalika Azim, Tisch '14.

Laylah Amatullah Barrayn is a documentary photographer and a frequent contributor to The New York Times, her latest story was on block parties which is currently online and was printed as a 64 page booklet for the newspaper. Barrayn is a co-author of MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora, it is the first book in nearly 30 years that highlights photography produced by women of African descent. Barrayn's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with recent solo shows in Venice and London.
