ART AND PUBLIC POLICY ALUM REFILWE NKOMO IN CONVERSATION WITH ANDREW TSHABANGU, AS PART OF “UN/DOING,” A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION OF THE ARCHIVE OF THE MARKET PHOTO WORKSHOP

Monday, Oct 23, 2023

APP Alum Refilwe Nkomo was in conversation with legendary South African photographer, Andrew Tshabangu  on October 21st about the role of image making in the doing and undoing of societies. The talk was part of the programme for “Un/doing”, a photographic exhibition of the archive of the Market Photo Workshop curated by Nkomo.

“In her 2023 publication, Ordinary Notes, Christina Sharpe asks “what is required of us now in this long time of our undoing?”. Through this selection of work from the archive of the Market Photo Workshop, we reflect on our individual and collective roles and responsibilities in the making, unravelling and repair of a city and a world and how we can view this period of our own fragile, long undoing as generative, hopeful, and possibly emergent. Within the overwhelming complexity of this time, we understand that we are at a moment of bifurcation, oscillating between rocks and hard places, where the decisions and choices we make today have profound impacts on future generations. Contained within our undoing, we may challenge ourselves to engage with the question of what is to be done and be brave enough to enter into the process of doing.”
