Dramatic Effects with a Movie Camera

Please join Gail Segal & Dr. Sheril Antonio on Wednesday, April 20th at 6 PM to celebrate their recent book, Dramatic Effects with a Movie Camera.  

Dramatic Effects with a Movie Camera is a practical guide to the visual storytelling potential of different camera techniques, demonstrating how they can produce compelling shots and sequences. With detailed analysis of clips from 45 films, from 30 countries, Gail Segal and Sheril Antonio show how choice of shot can dramatically affect your narrative.

Gail Segal is a writer, filmmaker, and teacher. Her film work includes the Peabody Award-winning documentary Arguing the World (co-producer) and a 15-part PBS series, The Shakespeare Hour. More recently, she wrote and directed the award winning narrative short, Filigrane, set in the Empty Quarter of the U.A.E., as well as a documentary portrait of women textile workers in Turkey, entitled Meanwhile, in Turkey. She is currently in development on three narrative feature projects.

Dr. Sheril Antonio is an Associate Arts Professor in the Department of Art and Public Policy, the Interim Chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, and the Senior Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives. She is the recipient of a 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award and has twice previously served as chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music including as the inaugural chair in 2003/4. She also served as chair of the Graduate Film Program in 2001/2 and the Interim Chair of the Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing from 2015 – 2015.
