Commedia dell'Arte: Commedia, Comedy, and Film/TV

The summer 2021 program has been canceled. 

Comedy in Shakespeare and Molière.

The Commedia program is an intensive acting workshop that engages the physical life of each actor in the pursuit of expanding range of expression. The class will explore the influence of Commedia in Shakespeare and Molière.

NOTE: The first part of the program takes place in-person in New York City. The second half of the course will be held online, synchronously via Zoom.

ITHEA-UT 2002 | 8 units | Instructor: Jim Calder

Join us this summer for a dynamic, hybrid class combining in-person and Zoom in an intensive acting program, and learn the practical skillset necessary to apply physical acting (Commedia, Moliere, Sitcom) training while acting in the mediums of film, television, and webseries. Class will delve into comedic material from ancient Italy, (mask and improv) and television/film scenes from the most current shows - and focus will be placed on the integration of bold physical choices, character work, and a spirit of play, with the subtlety, nuance, and "naturalness" required for memorable TV and film auditions and performances.


Students must adhere to NYU COVID safety practices as a portion of this class takes place in-person. We must remain flexible in our response to changing developments due to COVID-19. Should there be developments due to COVID-19, this class will revert to an online only, synchronous course. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our primary importance.

Admissions

Prerequisites:

  • Tisch Drama Majors - Strongly encouraged to complete 4 semesters of Primary Studio Training before participating in this Advanced Studio option.
  • NYU and Visiting students - One year of college or professional training.

Auditions: April 20. 2021 and April 22, 2021

Summer 2021

  • Undergraduate summer 2021 tuition: $12,296
  • Registration and Services Fee: $1,004

  • Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to/from the program.
