In Havana With Major Lazer

Tuesday, Mar 8, 2016

Diplo & Major Lazer made history on Sunday, March 6, 2016 with the first concert in Cuba by a major U.S. based group since the opening of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba.

The day before the historic concert, students participating in New York University Tisch School of the Arts Photography on Location and Documentary Video Production in Havana programs were invited to a lecture by Major Lazer, hosted by the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba.  Students got to listen and learn from a groundbreaking conversation between Major Lazer and various Cuban musicians and DJs.

Attended by over 400 thousand people in José Martí Anti-Imperialist Plaza, the concert was only the second U.S. musical act in the island nation since 1962.  This massive event is an example of how the semester-long programs give students a front-row seat to the major social-political shifts in Cuban society.

The Tisch spring 2017 Havana program applications will open in July.  For more information on programs offered in Havana as well as other locations across the globe visit the Tisch Special Programs Study Abroad page.
