Tisch/Danspace Residency
Summer 2017

Application due March 31st at 12noon
In 2017, Tisch School of the Arts will be in residence at Danspace Project from June 12 – June 17. The residency will be dedicated to supporting one of each: faculty, staff, undergraduate student, and graduate student. Current faculty, staff, and students at Tisch are eligible, and successful applicants must be available and present for all residency time for which they are assigned. The panel reviewing applications and making recommendations will include Tisch alumni who were past Danspace Residency grantees.
A total of up to 12 hours of residency time will be shared among approximately 4 artists (or groups of artists). In addition to access to the space during the residency (see attached schedule), there will be limited access to tech and tech support from the Danspace Project Technical Director. Examples of available tech include: lights on/off (there is not a lighting plot to work with), sound system and microphones, video, DVD and Blu-ray players and projector. Please note that Wi-Fi access is not available in the sanctuary at St Mark’s.
Points of Entry (POE)
Drawing on the successful use of points of entry strategies by institutions such as the Maggie Allessee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) at Florida State University, the Danspace Project application requires a plan for sharing residency material with an audience. Some examples of POE activities are listed above; applicants are encouraged to develop a plan that most authentically reflects their own proposed inquiry. Size, composition and interactivity with “audience” should be thoughtfully considered by applicants. Again, since this opportunity is meant to serve as a creative laboratory, rather than a formal presentational/performance opportunity, the proposed POE should address processes of inquiry, research and/or development. Successful applicants will finalize their POE in collaboration with the Tisch Initiative for Creative Research and Danspace Project staff.
These points of entry (POE) could include open rehearsals, public or invited conversations, published documentation or other methods of dissemination. The scale of dissemination will be up to each participating artist but preference this year will be given to proposals which feature time-based points of entry
Successful proposals
The alumni review panel will consider the following when reviewing applications:
- Does this residency proposal demonstrate understanding of the opportunity and how it might serve applicant’s needs at this time?
- Does it succinctly describe residency design and components – and does the applicant demonstrate capacity to complete the residency as designed?
- Is the proposed dissemination or POE strategy realistic (in terms of available resources and capacity) and does it reflect the artist’s overall residency goals?
Evaluation
Successful applicants will be asked to participate in an informal evaluation of their experience following their residency. They will be asked to reflect on their personal experience as resident artists, the usefulness of residency resources, and suggestions for improving the residency (including the application process) in future years. They may also be asked to serve as future panelists or roundtable participants in conversations (hosted by the Dean’s Office) about residency opportunities at Tisch.
Application
To apply for the Tisch/Danspace Project residency, please submit a written proposal in response to the following questions by 12noon on Friday, March 31st, 2017 to tisch.research@nyu.edu. Please use the following subject line in your cover email: “Danspace Residency Application 2017.”
Submissions should be PDF documents that re-state and respond to the following questions. Please do not exceed word limits indicated and label each page with your name and page number. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of alumni and staff. Successful applicants will be notified by email no later than Monday, April 10th.
- Since the DP residency is a research opportunity (and not just a free work-space opportunity), tell us a little about your research interests. What kinds of questions are you going to investigate through residency? How might a residency help you refine existing questions or formulate new ones? (300 words)
- Please describe in detail your proposed residency (150 words):
How will you utilize your time in the space? What is your preferred construction of residency time: contiguous, book-ended, other? Please include any preferred days/times and how many hours you would like to be awarded (you may request up to 12 hours).
Who will be working with you during the residency?
What tools will you need? What support will you need from Danspace?

What format of dissemination do you plan to use and when will it be offered?
Who is your target “audience” for this dissemination and how will you reach them?
What is your plan for documentation of your residency?
