"A love story about the power of arts as organizing":

dear friends and comrades,

it has been almost two years since my last email to you all. i pray this reaches you in great spirits. i am emailing today to share with you all a little bit of what i have been working on since the release of my first collection of poems, "my mother was a freedom fighter" which is currently in its third printing thanks to your support. in addition, to trying to carve out time for personal poetry projects, my partner, phillip agnew and i have been cultivating a collective and home for artists and organizers. late last year, we had the opportunity to do a TED talk about our work and our community with Smoke Signals Studio.  the talk is called "A Love Story about the Power of Art As Organizing" and we're super excited about it. it was shared for the first time by TED.com yesterday on lover's day.  You can watch it here. we look forward to you sharing it with your networks, educators, artists, poets, and organizers. it has been a challenging and exciting journey and we've learned so much. BIG thanks to the incomparable Rashaud Michel for producing our visuals and Vivian Azalia, Susanne Rostock, and Ra Image for providing the incredible footage. A huge shout out to local organizations we work with including: Dream Defenders, Community Justice Project, and Exchange for Change.

And a HUGE SHOUTOUT TO EACH OF YOU.  Check out the video.  You may make a cameo :-).

We would also love for you all to visit our website and take a look at our Artist's Manifesto, too. We hope to shift the current culture of individualism and encourage transformative visions of what art can and should be in relation to the everyday personal and political struggles we are facing as a country.  In Miami, artists have been used to help displace and exploit the issues that deeply impact our neighborhoods. We are asking for intentional and responsible conversations about how and where we create art.

Thank you for being our friends and community and supporting us as much as you have. We could not do any of the work we do without the small donations and contributions from our community at home and afar.

Thank you,

Aja
