Julia Murat

Julia Murat is a filmmaker, from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, graduated in Graphic Design from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and screenwriting from the Darcy Ribeiro Cinema School.

Her first fiction film HISTÓRIAS QUE SÓ EXISTEM QUANDO LEMBRADAS, premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was selected for more than 80 festivals around the world, among which are Toronto, San Sebastian, Rotterdam, New Directors New Films. Historias also won 39 international awards, including Best Film at the Abu Dhabi, Lima, Sofia, Lessinia festivals. Her first documentary DIA DOS PAIS (directed together with Leo Bittencourt in 2008), made its international debut at the Cinéma du Réel Festival and in Brazil at the É Tudo Verdade competition.

In 2017 Julia released her second fiction feature film PENDULAR, winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Berlin Film Festival and at the Uruguay International Film Festival, and then soon after shot the documentary film OPERAÇÕES DE GARANTIA DA LEI E DA ORDEM.

In 2022 Julia released Rule 34, Leopard D’oro best film at Locarno Film festival.

Julia was also experience as assistant director, assistant camera and editing after starting her career in 1996. She coproduced the feature films As Herdeiras by Marcelo Martinesi (Best Director and Best Actress at the Berlin Festival), feature-length documentary Excelentíssimos by Douglas Duarte, and associate producer of the film I Touched All Your Things by Matias Mariani and Maíra Buhler, which made its debut at the FidMarseille in 2014, as well as having produced all her personal projects.

Description of Project

The world as I knew is undergoing profound changes, and its being difficult for to adapt and respond to the novelties. I enrolled in this master's program to confront these challenges and discover new ways to understand myself. However, I now face new dilemmas: How can I find stability within myself while embracing, at the same time, the novelties, the transformative experiences? How can I avoid creating fixed identities that limit and reduce myself while trying to create new translations?
