The opportunities listed below are for undergraduate students only. The Department of Performance Studies is not involved in the administration of these opportunities, but you can contact the departments and organizations listed below with any questions. 

When preparing your applications for these opportunities please consider making an appointment with the Tisch Office of Career Development to work with the career counselors on their team. They specialize in helping students prepare applications for fellowship and grant programs.

Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Mark and Ruti Bell Public Service Scholarship

New York University invites current second- and third-year undergraduate students who plan to pursue a career that advances the public good to apply for the Bell Public Service Scholarship. This program seeks to enable students to pursue careers in the public service sector by providing them with increased financial freedom. The annual scholarships of up to $8,000 will be renewable until graduation.

Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics

Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics To recognize and reward outstanding essays on a topic related to ethics. Eligible to compete are full time juniors and seniors at accredited colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Essays must be reviewed by a faculty sponsor and three copies of the essay must be submitted. Essays must be 3,000 and 4,000 words in length and on a theme of the student’s choice. Readers look for adherence to design format, carefully proofread essays, well thought out essays that do not stray from the topic and eloquence of writing style. First prize is $5,000, second prize is $2,500 and third prize is $1,500. Two Honorable mentions are awarded, $500 each.

Gilman International Scholarship

 The Gilman Scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students of nontraditional age. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of public and private institutions from all 50 states. Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible student abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Recipients are also eligible to receive $3000 Critical Need Language Supplement for selected languages. Students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2 year or 4 year undergraduate colleges or universities or studying for at least four weeks abroad are eligible to apply. Summer programs alone are not eligible. This congressionally funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education.

Fellowship Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

NYU Global Leadership Summit

The NYU Global Leadership Summit is a three-day summit inviting sophomores and juniors from across NYU’s global network to think critically about a complex real-world issue (such as the European refugee crisis or police reform in the U.S.) and develop the leadership skills needed to take action. Students work collaboratively with peers, leaders and community organizations. This program has been hosted in collaboration with other university partners including NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Prague, Global Programs, Global Spiritual Life, the NYU Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, and currently John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

NYU Leadership Fellows Program

NYU Leadership Fellows Program is a yearlong program that prepares rising sophomores and juniors to build leadership skills and become changemakers both at NYU and beyond. Program offerings include workshops, a weekend retreat, leadership assessments, individual development, one-on-one coaching and a team challenge. Through such diverse offerings, students discover their strengths, build new skills, engage with peers across NYU, expand their network and design a project where everyone leads collectively.

NYU Changemaker Fellowship

Funded by David A. Katz and Cecilia T. Absher, the Changemaker Fellowship identifies and supports exceptionally talented and dedicated undergraduates who are committed to addressing issues of economic and/or racial inequality through a summer internship experience. This Fellowship supports those students’ career and leadership development by providing them with professional development, mentoring, and networking opportunities in addition to financial support. Through a rigorous application and selection process, the Changemaker Fellowship awards grants of $5,000 each to up to 12 students working in unpaid summer internships focused on addressing issues of inequality.
