Take these 3 simple steps to set up NYU Classes and Zoom for delivering class remotely.
STEP 1: Set Up Your NYU Classes Sites
NYU Classes is the University’s Learning Management System, where you can share materials, communicate with students, hold virtual classrooms and office hours, set up assignments for submission, keep track of attendance and grades, and more. It is furthermore integrated with Albert, so your roster is synced and your grades can be submitted from Classes. Classes can be used to deliver your course synchronously or asynchronously. In short, it is the easiest, most supported, and most direct way to conduct class online. Contact:

- Decide how you will communicate with your students. Options:
- Use the Announcements tool in Classes, which is displayed on the site’s home page and can be emailed to students, too. How to Use the Announcements Tool
- Use the Messages tool in Classes, which allows you to send messages to the entire class or select members. How to Use the Messages Tool
- Use the Google Group feature in Classes, which creates a Gmail group email through which you can share Google folders, documents, slides, etc. How To Use Google Groups in Classes
- Use your university Gmail account, which is integrated with other Google products
STEP 2: Set Up Zoom
Zoom is an audio/video/web conferencing tool in NYU Classes and is the only conferencing platform that will be supported for remote teaching, remote advising, virtual office hours, etc. You can use Zoom to conduct synchronous, remote discussions with video and/or audio. - Go to nyu.zoom.us and log in with your NYU netID and password (select Sign In with SSO if prompted).
- Set up your Zoom profile, including your Personal Meeting ID (PMID) and customizable Personal Link. You can share this link anytime to hold an on-the-fly video meeting.
- Download Zoom on your computer and other devices. Make sure to sign in your NYU netID and password, rather than a personal Zoom account. Select Sign In with SSO, and in the next window, enter “nyu” as Your company domain. When prompted, click the “open zoom.us” button. *Note: by not downloading Zoom on your computer, certain functionality may be restricted (like recording and muting participants).
- Add the Zoom Extension for Browsers, which allows you to start or schedule your Zoom meeting with a single click from within Google calendar.
You are ready to start a Zoom session!
STEP 3: Check your Hardware & Connections
Make sure you are set up with a stable internet connection and have all the hardware and software you need. Contact:
- Identify your internet connections at home and at work. WiFi can be unreliable, particularly for video connections, so identifying backups is essential.
- Is a wired connection possible? If so, make sure you have the appropriate hardware to connect: an ethernet cable and means of connecting your devices (Mac laptops will require a dongle.)
- Do you have a mobile phone or tablet connected to cellular service?
- Identify an audio/video device. A computer with a built-in webcam is ideal; external webcams are also easy to add onto a computer with or without built-in webcams. A mobile phone or tablet with a built-in webcam can also work.
- Ensure you are set up with MFA and NYU VPN, which provides a secure connection over WiFi and may be required to access some NYU resources when off-campus.
