NYU Immigrant Defense Initiative
The NYU Immigrant Immigrant Defense Initiative (IDI) serves the immigration-related legal needs of NYU students and employees, and their immediate family members. IDI provides free, confidential legal consultations and representation before immigration court and agencies.
The IDI serves:
- NYU students at schools and graduate levels
- NYU employees (including faculty, staff, and contract-based employees)
- The immediate family members of the above (parents, siblings, and spouses)
Additional IDI information and resources can be found on their site and within these slides.
NYU Office of Global Services
The Office of Global Services (OGS) is the resource at NYU for immigration and visa questions. They advise on immigration regulations in the US and visas needed outside of the US for NYU purposes. They also advise on international taxes, moving internationally, and other challenges for NYU faculty and staff.
The OGS regularly hosts a variety of workshops and webinars regarding the above topics. Upcoming OGS events and webinars can be found here. Previously recorded webinars can also be viewed here - note that an NYU email address is needed to access recordings.
Encounters with Law Enforcement
The OGS has offered guidance for all NYU students, staff, and faculty that can be found here. A previously recorded webinar discussing this content can be accessed here. Note that you will need an NYU email address to access this recording.
Emergency Financial Assistance
The NYU Student Emergency Fund provides NYU students (U.S. citizens and international students) with financial support when they need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, or unavoidable emergency expenses, including unanticipated housing costs. Any student who requires emergency funds should complete the Emergency Fund Application.
NYU Summer Housing
Students who need to stay in NYC this summer may take advantage of NYU’s summer housing offerings. NYU offers safe, convenient, affordable housing for students who will be in New York studying, working, pursuing an internship, or conducting research; available spaces will primarily be in shared bedrooms in traditionally undergraduate residence halls, which will be available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Financial support is available for students with pressing needs; please see the NYU Student Emergency Fund.
Doctoral Opportunities to Conduct Research at NYU Global Sites
The Office of the Provost is piloting a new program through the Global Research Initiatives (GRI) to expand doctoral student access to the global network. In this pilot, GRI Opportunities provide doctoral students at any stage of their program to conduct independent research at a global site while participating in research and professional development seminars. GRI Opportunities, which complement doctoral GRIs and Dissertation Writing Workshops at the sites, are open to matriculated doctoral candidates from all schools and departments. Students will be provided with travel (booked through the GRI program), shared work space, and a flat-rate per-diem subsidy to partially defray living costs.
General Opportunities to Study at NYU Global Sites
NYU is committed to increasing undergraduate participation in global study and to expanding opportunities for graduate students in all schools to study at our global sites. Undergraduates can apply to study away this summer and/or next academic year. Students interested in summer opportunities in particular should note that our US locations still have availability. Financial aid is available for both semester and summer study away. Students interested in applying for fall or spring can apply via the Global Programs website. Given the late date, students interested in studying away for summer should email global.programs@nyu.edu.
Masters and doctoral students interested in pursuing study at a global site or portal campus are encouraged to contact the Office of Global Programs by emailing global.programs@nyu.edu to explore what may be possible at each location.
