The Toronto International Film Festival announced their full lineup for 2022. Alum Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny will be included in Special Presentations. Nanny, a film written and directed by Jusu, follows an undocumented nanny working for a privileged couple in New York City. As she prepares for the arrival of the son she left behind in Senegal, a violent supernatural presence invades her reality, threatening the American dream she is painstakingly piecing together. Blumhouse and Amazon Prime acquired distribution rights back in March of this year.
In the Discovery section, alum Elegance Bratton’s The Inspection will have its World Premiere. The film, Bratton’s narrative feature film debut, stars Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union in an autobiographical tale in which a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. A24 is producing.
Also in Discovery is Runner, written and directed by alum Marian Mathias. Runner follows Haas (Hannah Schiller), an 18-year-old girl who was raised by her father in the rural Midwest. When her father suddenly dies, she must carry out his wish to be buried in the town where he was born. There, she meets a young man named Will (Darren Houle), a lonely, creative soul who is working to support his family back home. The two form a friendship that challenges their understanding of love and loss. Produced by alum Joy Jorgensen for Killjoy Films with cinematography by alum Jomo Fray, the film will have its dual premiere at TIFF and San Sebastian Film Festival.
Alum Pepi Ginsberg's The Pass will have it's North American Premiere in the Short Cuts program. Per the official logline, "on holiday, Ben declines an offer from a handsome man, Sam, to go to a private beach, The Pass. There, Ben meets Christopher who grows aggressive as he struggles to mask his desires for Ben, leaving him afraid to get out of the water."
TIFF 2022 runs from September 8-18th.
