Alum Karishma Dev Dube’s Bittu is advancing in the Academy Awards’ Best Live Action Short Film category following the 93rd Oscars Shortlist announcement this week!

Bittu, which is one of only ten finalists left in the category, has been a festival and critical favorite since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The short has won a Student Academy Award and the inaugural Black Family Prize, most recently winning Dube a Student DGA award.

Produced by fellow alum Mary Evangelista, Bittu is inspired by a true story: an infamous school poisoning that took place in India in 2013. Dube said, “As a filmmaker, my intention is to explore individuality and the cost that often comes with it, especially in typically conservative worlds and spaces.”
