On January 10, Tisch Drama alum Brittney Johnson '12 stepped out onstage at the Gershwin Theatre, making her debut—and making history—as the first Glinda of color in Wicked on Broadway.

Johnson had joined the Broadway company as a member of the ensemble last summer and as a Glinda understudy. Recently, after her first performance as the iconic character, Johnson took to Instagram to share her excitement, writing:

“My heart is bursting with gratitude. Thank you, thank you! God is so good! I am so humbled to be the first black Glinda and honored to fulfill the dreams and hopes of so many! I feel like my feet have yet to touch down.

The importance of this moment in history is only amplified by the message of this beautiful show: Love, friendship, and kindness are stronger than any division caused by a fear of ‘otherness.’... Representation is so important, and I'm honored to be a representative here on Broadway and in the theatre community."
