Digital Singing Submission Instructions

LIVE ONLINE SINGING INSTRUCTIONS

1. When your evaluator enters the room make sure that you are visible from your knees to the top of your head. If you plan to use your arms, please make sure that you never exit the frame.

2. When performing your songs, please make sure the camera is at eye level and that you are NOT looking directly into the camera. Feel free to look to either side of the camera.

3. Please make sure you have as neutral a background as possible for your artistic review. Do not use a virtual background.

4. Make sure that your accompaniment track follows the following guidelines:

  • Accompaniment track is a piano track, not a karaoke track.
  • Play accompaniment from a secondary device (not the device conducting the video call).
  • Device that plays track is placed behind and to the side of you. If the evaluator is noon, track should be at 4 o’clock.

SONG VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

A note on song videos: These videos are being updated for backup purposes only. These videos are not for a pre-screening process. Every Musical Theatre applicant will be required to sing their song selection(s) live via Zoom. Only in cases of technical difficulties will the evaluators be asked to consult the videos provided by the applicant. Uploading videos is not a replacement for completing a live singing portion of the Artistic Review. If you have previously recorded college audition or pre-screen song videos that fit the below guidelines, please feel free to use those.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SONG VIDEOS

1. Make two separate videos, one for each song selection.

  • Songs should be filmed in a 3⁄4 shot which means the top of the head to the knees should be visible in the frame.
  • Each song selection should be 32 bars—no more, no less.
  • Each song selection must be shot in one take—no editing.
  • You must use live piano accompaniment or a recorded instrumental version.

2. Begin each video with an introduction (15 seconds or less), which should be shot separately, stating:

  • Your name
  • Song Title
  • Musical

3. Check each video to make sure that:

  • You appear upright in the frame—not sideways or upside down!
  • Video quality is good and you can see yourself clearly.
  • Sound quality is good and you can hear yourself clearly.
  • Accompaniment should not be the closest thing to the camera. Make sure the sound balance allows for your voice to be heard over the accompaniment
  • Camera is at eye level, and that you are not looking directly into it.
  • Your introduction and entire song selection are in the video.
  • You are the star of your video and are the only person in it.

4. Props and costumes are not permitted.

5. Each song selection must follow the Singing Evaluation guidelines.
