Richard Move, Tisch Dance Assistant Arts Professor, to make their Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) debut for Next Wave 2025 with their acclaimed dance-theater work “Martha@BAM - The 1963 Interview.” Running from October 28 to November 1, 2025, this revival is a historic performance in Move's continuous body of work.
“Martha@...The 1963 Interview,” which premiered to sold-out crowds at Dance Theater Workshop in 2011, was named “Best Dance of 2011" by ARTFORUM International and Time Out New York. The show is a dramatic reworking of the historic 1963 interview between modern dance choreographer Martha Graham and dance critic Walter Terry.
Move plays Graham in a part that The New York Times calls "uncannily precise and powerfully evocative." Lisa Kron, a Tony Award-winning actor and playwright, returns to the stage as Walter Terry. The cast also includes PeiJu Chien-Pott, former Principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Catherine Cabeen, former Graham Company member.
More than a reconstruction, “Martha@BAM - The 1963 Interview” is a multilayered, immersive depiction of Graham's influence, wit, and philosophy as seen through Move's scholarly and dramatic eyes. The piece uses verbatim text, unique choreography, and multimedia elements to animate Graham's legacy in real time.
The production features scenic design by Gabriel Barcia-Colombo and Roberto Montenegro, costumes by Pilar Limosner and Karen Young, lighting by Donalee Katz, dramaturgy by Joshua Lubin-Levy, rehearsal direction by Linda Hodes, and a pre-performance video by legendary video artist Charles Atlas.
Move's work continues to seamlessly blend the lines between choreography, biography, and societal commentary; an approach that represents the depth of their contributions both within and beyond the studio. Move's “Martha@BAM - The 1963 Interview” continues to push the boundaries of what dance can be, while simultaneously providing audience members with a compelling example of performance as a living archive.
