Associate Arts Professor, James Martin recently conceived, wrote, directed, and choreographed Under the Whale, a personal essay short depicting the making of a dance/play about climate change. Set on high school age actor/dancers in Queens and Manhattan, the piece takes a surprising turn when, during the rehearsal process, the Florida Stoneman Douglas shooting happens. As the student movement for gun control rages, the piece hardens into a diatribe of youth challenging those "adults posing as grownups" who deny climate change. More than just an archive of the rehearsals and performance, the film delivers the Professor Martin's personal reasons for making the piece.
