Hollywood Foreign Press Association Funds Preservation Internships

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Charitable Trust (the HFPA Trust) has awarded a grant to NYU's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) program to support student internships in 2017. This is the seventh such grant the HFPA has made to the MIAP program, which is part of the Department of Cinema Studies in the Tisch School of the Arts.

MIAP's internship program places students in motion picture collections within and outside of New York City. Graduate student interns collaborate with professionals to inspect, catalog, and preserve vulnerable audiovisual materials in a range of formats.

The 2017 grant will support one semester-long internship in New York City during the academic year and one summer internship, during which students will directly support motion picture conservation, preservation, and access projects within organizations recognized for their rich collections and commitment to preserving film history and culture.

The first of these internships will help establish an official archive at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which was founded in 1969 to showcase American and international cinema and the works of new filmmakers. Past organizations where HFPA-funded MIAP students have interned include the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Film-Makers' Cooperative, IndieCollect, the National Film Archives of the Philippines, the Museum of Modern Art's Celeste Bartos Film Preservation Center, the Museum of the Moving Image, and others.

Situated within the Department of Cinema Studies in NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, the MIAP Master of Arts program is a two-year, interdisciplinary course of study that trains future professionals to manage and preserve collections of film, video, new media, and digital works. The HFPA Trust is the philanthropic arm of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which "has bestowed more than $21.6 million in fellowships and grants to film schools and non-profit organizations...in the past 27 years." MIAP is grateful to the HFPA for continuing to support its internship program.
