Alumni and faculty from the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) program in the Department of Cinema Studies, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, were a strong presence at a community archiving workshop in Manila and two recent preservation conferences: the 2017 Personal Digital Archiving conference hosted by Stanford University Libraries in late March, and the 21st Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA) conference, jointly hosted in early April by University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UPSLIS) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and Filipino television network, ABS-CBN.

At the 2017 Personal Digital Archiving (PDA) conference in Palo Alto, CA, Professor Howard Besser, MIAP's founding Director, participated in a "PDA Retrospect and Prospect" panel discussion on the history and future of personal digital archiving. As part of the conference's "Engaging Communities in PDA" session, Jasmyn R. Castro (MIAP '15) presented on The Great Migration, a public program initiated by the Media Preservation Department of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Stefan Elnabli (MIAP '10) co-taught a workshop for conference participants on "Archiving Born Digital Audio and Video Collections." Though Shu-Wen Lin (MIAP '16) could not attend, her former internship supervisor at Stanford University Libraries, Hannah Frost, was able to present on Lin's MIAP thesis research in a talk titled "From Virtual to Reality: Dissecting Jennifer Steinkamp’s Software-Based Installation," part of a "PDA and the Arts" session.

With generous support from the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA), Prof. Mona Jimenez, Marie Lascu (MIAP '12), and Yvonne Ng (MIAP '08) traveled to Manila to lead a community archiving workshop, in collaboration with Prof. Rose Roque, Prof. Benedict ‘bono’ Salazar Olgado (MIAP '12), and students at the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UPSLIS). UPSLIS and SEAPAVAA provided additional support.

The community archiving workshop took place on April 1, 2017, at UPSLIS. Participants took critical steps to organize, catalog, and facilitate preservation of U-matic tapes in the AsiaVisions collection held by the IBON Foundation. AsiaVisions was an independent media collective composed of filmmakers, photographers, and journalists who documented protests and political movements during the period of Martial Law in the Philippines, under Ferdinand Marcos. The collective produced newsreels and documentaries which served as tools for raising awareness against propaganda disseminated by the Marcos regime. Upon its dissolution in 1998, AsiaVisions transferred its collection to the IBON Foundation, a development organization that "seeks to promote an understanding of socioeconomics that serves the interests and aspirations of the Filipino people."

Benedict ‘bono’ Salazar Olgado (MIAP '12) served as Conference Convener/Chair and overall coordinator. Pawarisa Nipawattanapong ('13) was elected, and Olgado re-elected, to the Executive Council / Board of SEAPAVAA.
