Shu-Wen Lin, Stanford University Libraries, Summer 2015, IMLS

In Summer 2015, I got a chance to intern at the Stanford Media Preservation Lab and the Department of Special Collections. I participated in the management of the film, video and born-digital media collections in Redwood City facility. The collection consists of media-based archives from visual artist Carolee Schneemann and the Bay Area film production company Telling Pictures as well as the Mike Baker collection in the East Asia Library. The main goal of the internship is to work with and learn about media preservation, understand the workflows in a research library setting, and perform preservation tasks with different media. I was trained by both departments in devising an organization scheme for the media, documenting workflows for preservation actions as well as preparing the collections for future digitization.
