Kayla Henry-Griffin, Third World Newsreel, Fall 2021

One of my first tasks at Third World Newsreel was to research Filemaker Pro and I received a crash course on Third World Newsreel’s Filemaker Pro database (which was created and configured by MIAP alumni). I decided to update the manual and the workflows within the manual so that the next intern or archivist working in the database would be able to have an understanding of what is needed for the database.  Throughout this project, I was also tasked with connecting with MIAP alumni who worked with Third World Newsreel to ask them questions about their work with the Filemaker database; this supported me in ensuring that I started where the alums left off with the database. I made sure that my current actions could be understood not only to the people who created the database but also to those who will be using it in the future.

Another project I took on was researching grants that Third World Newsreel could potentially apply for. It was decided that I would support the organization by applying for a National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) grant. I learned the guidelines and eligibility requirements for the basic NFPF grant and produced a document that works as a draft grant proposal for the film, Mississippi Triangle. Research included watching the film, doing preliminary research on the filmmakers, and searching for scholarly sources on the film itself.

My experience with Third World Newsreel was filled with building my skills in workflow management and preparing for grant proposals. It was beneficial that I gained confidence in these two areas since my future work will be primarily producing workflows and manuals as well as applying for funding and other financial resources.
