Forms in Motion: Asian Documentary, Curation, and the Global Film Industry

This screening and talk brings together recent short documentaries that reflect emerging approaches to nonfiction storytelling in Asia.
The films connect to different aspects of my work across documentary production, programming, curation, and project development. Following the screening, I will discuss the evolving forms emerging in contemporary documentary cinema and reflect on my experience supporting Asian filmmakers through Docs by the Sea.
The talk will also examine how curatorial decisions influence which films enter international festivals and how they are positioned for global audiences. Drawing on my work across Asian and international documentary networks, I will consider the opportunities, expectations, and structural challenges Asian filmmakers encounter within the global documentary industry.
The program will conclude with an audience Q&A.
This is an in-person event, open to the public. Prior registration is required. Non-NYU attendees will receive emailed instructions for building access and may be asked to present a government-issued photo ID upon arrival. NYU attendees must present their NYU ID.

About the Speaker
Gugi Gumilang is an Indonesian documentary producer, programmer, and industry consultant working across Asia and the international documentary landscape. He is Program Director of In-Docs/Docs by the Sea, supporting Asian filmmakers through project development, international co-production, mentorship, and industry access. He is also film programmer for Hot Docs and the Camden International Film Festival.
