"Experience what can not be said": Gina Kim's VR Trilogy to XR
Friday, November 8
6:00pm – 8:00pm
Virtual event on Zoom

Gina Kim's
virtual reality (VR) trilogy on US military comfort women, the Comfortless Trilogy, has garnered international acclaim ever since the director's first VR film, Bloodless, won the first Best VR story award at the 2017 Venice International Film Festival. The second project, Tearless (2021), further explored Kim's focus on bringing back the silenced voice of the comfort women through the viewer's embodied experience. The final VR film, Comfortless, which premiered at the Venice Immersive 2023, not only completed the trilogy, but also expanded the project’s scope through the creation of the extended reality (XR) “American Town,” the brothel town near the US Air Force base featured in the VR experience. The AR and XR versions of both Tearless and Comfortless have reached a larger audience beyond the exhibition venues, allowing their users to bring the critical sites of historical trauma into their personal spaces.

This event will feature the director's talk on her journey from producing the VR trilogy to her recent experimentations with other reality media.

Kim’s VR films and XR applications will be available for viewing upon prior arrangements in the Cinema Studies Film Study Center. The NYU community can email cmc673@nyu.edu for viewing appointments of all three VR films.

This event is is a virtual event on Zoom that is free and open to the public. Registration required.
