Chile 1973-2023 Art, Film, Literature after the Coup

Film Program #4: Unfinished Diary (Marilú Mallet, 1982) + Fragments from an Unfinished Diary (Angelina Vázquez, 1983)

Friday, October 13, 6:00 pm
Michelson Theater, 721 Broadway

“The notion of the unfinished can be found at the core of two of the most important films of Chilean exile cinema: Journal inachevé (Unfinished Diary, 1982) by Marilú Mallet and Fragmentos de un diario inacabado (Fragments from an Unfinished Diary, 1983) by Angelina Vázquez. These major works not only inscribe in their titles their status as filmic diaries but also the figure of incompletion. Whereas Mallet’s filmed diary offers a slice of life of the director as an exile in Montreal, Vázquez’s title foregrounds the interruption of her own frustrated homecoming to Chile, a journey she registered in a written diary. The director entered semi-clandestinely in 1983 to make a film about the state of the country but was forced to leave by agents of Pinochet’s dictatorship. Vázquez’s crew ended up making the film while she directed from Helsinki, where she was exiled.”
