Lana Lin’s experimental documentary, The Cancer Journals Revisited (2018, 98 minutes), is many things but perhaps most importantly a work of women of color world-building.
This event offers 24h access to Lin’s award-winning film (link forthcoming), and a live panel discussion on queer feminist body politics, aesthetics, and collaboration with the filmmaker, Professors Josslyn Luckett and Zhen Zhang as well as PhD candidates Zoe Jiang and Anila Gill from the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU.
About the film
The Cancer Journals Revisited is prompted by the question of what it means to re-visit and re-vision Black lesbian feminist poet Audre Lorde’s classic 1980 memoir of her breast cancer experience today. Twenty-six writers, artists, activists, health care advocates, and current and former patients recite Lorde’s manifesto aloud on camera, collectively dramatizing it and producing an oration for the screen. The film is both a critical commentary and a poetic reflection upon the precarious conditions of survival within the intimate and politicized public sphere of illness.
The event is hosted by the Asian Film and Media Initiative and co-organized by Feng-Mei Heberer and Zhen Zhang.

About the panelists
Lana Lin is a filmmaker, artist, and writer whose creative practice concerns embodied vulnerabilities. Her experimental films and multi-disciplinary projects (as Lin + Lam) have been shown among others at the Museum of Modern Art, Stedelijk Museum, and China-Taipei Film Archive.
Lin is an Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School, New York and author of Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects (Fordham, Nov 2017). http://www.lanalin.com/
Professors Josslyn Luckett and Zhen Zhang both teach in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. They are joined by PhDs candidate Zoe Jiang and Anila Gill from the same department.
