ELVIRA (CHAOFAN) ZHANG
M.A. Arts Politics Class of 2027
BA Fine Art, University of Arts London
Elvira creates contemporary art that explores self-identity, female development, social issues, and the fluidity of emotions. Her artistic perspective has been shaped by educational experiences in Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles and New York, which have deepened her understanding of identity and expanded her artistic vision across different cultural contexts. Working primarily through abstract and emotionally driven painting, Elvira explores her evolving sense of identity as she moves between cultures and environments. Her paintings serve as vessels for emotional expression, while also recording fluctuations in her inner state and holding experiences and memories that carry personal significance.
Rooted in the interactive nature of contemporary art, Elvira’s work invites viewers to engage with each piece from their own perspectives and experiences. Rather than prescribing a singular interpretation, she creates space for diverse associations, connections, and reflections to emerge between the artwork and its audience.
