M.A. Arts Politics Class of 2023

B.A. in Political Science and Drama, University of Puerto Rico

Catalina is a dancer born and raised in Puerto Rico with a strong interest in making dance and other artistic expressions more accessible. She recently graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a B.A. in Political Science, a second major in Drama, and a minor in Human Rights. Through the intersection between art and politics, she wants to investigate the artistic expressions that arise as a result of the displacement of Puerto Ricans due to foreigners coming to the island to evade taxes. She is also interested in investigating the art that has emerged as a result of austerity measures that worsen the quality of life of Puerto Ricans. One of the goals she has for this program is to create a new dialogue between her artistic practice and the critical thinking that emerges both from everyday life and from various theoretical frameworks.

What drew you to the M.A in Arts Politics:

I have always thought that art and politics go hand in hand as art is a component of cultural activities that nurture society. This program will help me to reflect and take action through theoretical frameworks that will allow me to expand and change the way I think, create and reproduce art. It is imperative for me to be aware of how I engage in artistic practices; therefore, I wish to be part of an innovative space where awareness, empathy, respect, and collaboration are essential.
