M.A. Arts Politics Class of 2022

B.F.A. Art with minor in Theather, Universidad Finis Terrae Graduate Diploma in Art history and Theory, Universidad Catolica de Chile

Antonieta Landa (Santiago, Chile, 1982) Curator and art administrator based in NYC. She holds a bachelor's in arts from Universidad Finis Terrae, a diploma in Art History from PUC de Chile, and a MA in Art Politics from NYU. The Latinx Project awarded her a Public Humanities fellowship in 2022, and she is part of the NALAC Advocacy Leadership Institute's 2023 cohort. Her practice has focused on the work of Latino artists outside their countries of origin, specifically on the relationship between identity and territory and the euro-centered interpretation of this identity, which is often merged and read as one, when the complexities of this identity are infinite. From 2013 to 2019 she was based in Shanghai funding AL Works, an organization with a presence in Shanghai and Santiago, this organization was mainly dedicated to taking contemporary South American art to Mainland China and Hong Kong, and its focus was to escape from the exoticism where Latin American art has been portrayed. She is also co-founder and director of La Revista Magazine, a magazine that seeks to be a platform for Chilean artists and creatives working or showing their work in the USA. The work aims to explore and complicate the idea of a static identity and how it is expressed in artistic expressions outside its original territory. She is currently the Event Manager for El Museo del Barrio.

What drew you to the M.A. in Arts Politics?

One of the reasons why I was attracted to the program was its flexibility in allowing students to customize their class selections based on their specific interests. This is also why the cohort is so diverse in terms of professional backgrounds.

How did your experience in the program shape your work?

The program has had a significant impact on my advocacy work by equipping me with various intellectual tools such as critical thinking and research skills. These tools have helped me to analyze complex issues, develop effective strategies, and communicate my ideas more clearly and persuasively. Moreover, attending APP has exposed me to diverse perspectives and ideas, broadening my understanding of social, economic, and political issues. In summary, the program has played a crucial role in shaping my work, making me a more effective advocate for the causes that I am passionate about.

What are some of the challenges and/or rewards of this program?

It is challenging that the program is only one year long as there is a lot to process within this timeframe. However, as someone who took a career break to participate in the program, I appreciate the opportunity to complete it within a year.
