Ericka Jones Craven

Ericka is an Atlanta based photographer and visual content creator whose work often surfaces themes of identity, black culture and religion. A self-proclaimed conceptual artist, Jones-Craven uses photo, video and film to create compelling visuals that blur the line between art photography and photojournalism. Jones-Craven's art is stylized by odd perspectives and wild color. Jones-Craven has a BFA in Art Photography and a BA in Religion from Syracuse University. She has presented her research annually at the Ronald E. McNair symposiums for her projects "Let It Be" and "Up for Air". In the past, Ericka has contributed creative work and writing pieces to the following organizations and publications: Renegade Magazine, Milk Studios, Light Work, SECCA, Atlanta Photography Group Gallery and the Roadwork Center. She plans to pursue a career in arts advocacy, curating and fine art.

What drew you to the M.A. in Arts Politics?

I have always had a passion for arts and my community. My work is more than often influenced by social, political and economic trends that engage black bodies and spaces. Because research has made up a huge foundation of my work; I craved an academic space where I could think, create and grow simultaneously in both art and change. The Arts Politics Program allows me to ask questions about my interdisciplinary methods, challenge my intentions and push the boundaries of art into a political space. I want to make art that can stand on its own to mobilize, dismantle, heal and protect the communities I exist in.
