Wan-Jung Wei

Wan-Jung Wei is an arts manager, dancer and choreographer who continuously explores the relations between and possibilities of performing arts and politics through her dance works. Her dance project "Here, or There" was selected by Dumbo Dance Festival 2010 in New York. She believes that arts and politics are means of creating space in life.

Wan-Jung Wei is the youngest leader of the OISTAT Headquarters since its inception, also the first with diplomatic training. She joined OISTAT in 2011 and has since applied the blend of her passion for performing arts and background in international affairs to her daily work.

OISTAT, International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians, is an international platform for theatre-makers around the world with members in over 50 countries.  Founded in 1968 in Prague, its Headquarters was relocated to Taipei, Taiwan in 2006. OISTAT’s international projects include World Stage Design, Scenofest, Theatre Architecture Competition and World Scenography. What drew you to the MA Arts Politics program?

I found myself fascinated by performing arts and politics at a young age. Though most people think they are unrelated, I do see the connection between them and want to explore more. Through the years, my dancer friends and friends with politics majors have all thought I was "special and/or having crazy ideas". For them, I am someone who is always "in-between". I could not find a space to fit in my interest until I landed in the MA in Arts Politics. For me, it is a perfect match.

How did your experience in the program shape your work?

The program expanded my horizons and also led me through  creative and academic approaches of examining my works.

What are you doing now? 

I joined OISTAT as a secretary in 2011 and I am now the General Manager. I oversee budget, strategy, global membership development, and international projects for this global organisation.
