Professor Hentyle Yapp Performed in 'THEM' by Ishmael Houston Jones

In June 2018, Dr. Hentyle Yapp performed in the restaging of THEM at Perfomance Space NY. “THEM” — conceived, directed and performed by Chris Cochrane (musician), Dennis Cooper (writer) and Ishmael Houston-Jones (choreographer) was originally presented in the same venue in 1986, then called PS122.

From the New York Times:

"What happened on stage was structured improvisation: In the program, Mr. Houston-Jones acknowledges the other dancers (Alvaro Gonzalez Dupuy, Johnnie Cruise Mercer, Michael Parmelee, Jeremy Pheiffer, Kensaku Shinohara, Michael Watkiss and Hentyle Yapp) as part of the choreographic creation. These seven perform with exceptional, sometimes frightening, intensity. Yet their manner is cool: They add no histrionics.

“THEM” is another mysterious work, admirably and powerfully so. In a collage of disparate scenes, we’re taken from physical attraction — demonstrations of consensual involvement as well as remarkably precise sexual violence — to imagery of physical affliction and death. But “THEM” keeps taking us by surprise. Even its most overtly expressive incidents are hard to label."
