Art and Public Policy Alum Gina Goico (2021) was selected as a 2022-23 Research Fellow at the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute is a locus for a community of scholars in the field of Dominican Studies and sponsors interdisciplinary research projects.

"Gina Goico is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and activist pursing a PhD in Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. A native of the Dominican Republic, Goico draws artistic inspiration from lived experiences in the Dominican Republic and the United States. Goico’s portfolio reveals a diverse range of artistic capabilities from ink drawings and embroidery to installations and performance pieces. The 2022 CUNY DSI Research Fellowship will enable Goico to craft a digital archive and critical essay from an earlier project titled, LovingSUITS. The same brings together soft weighted sculptures and multimedia documentation of the narratives of feminized Dominicans regarding family dynamics, love, and self-love. As a 2022 CUNY DSI Research Fellow, Goico will analyze interviews conducted for this project between 2019 and 2022 to understand how Dominican womanhood is imagined within domestic spaces and reproduced in public spheres. Among the scholarly texts Goico will engage for this project are: All about Love – bell hooks, Black Behind the Ears – Ginetta E. Candelario,  Borders of Dominicanidad – Lorgia Garcia Pena, and Surveying the Landscape of Race and Nation in Hispaniola – Milagros Ricourt."
