Thursday, Jun 7, 2018

Arts Politics M.A. Candidate (’18) Ikram Lakhdhar hosted an evening of poetry  and conversation with her mother, Tunisian Poet, Sondes Baccar. For her independent study, Lakhdhar translated excerpts from Baccar’s poetry from Arabic to English for the first time. During the event, she also shared moments of intimacy and discovery during the process of translation. This filial exchange is an exploration of the role of translation to transcend cultural and linguistic borders.

The event included an introduction by Kathy Engel, Poet and Chair of Department, Art & Public Policy, NYU Tisch School of the Art.

The event took place on Monday, May 14th from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies.
