Laylah Amatullah Barrayn '20 has been photographing fellow New Yorkers during COVID-19. Documenting them wearing their facemasks, she quickly realized the face coverings were another way to express personal and cultural identity.

Though masks have become a signifier of social distancing, a stark reminder of life amid the pandemic, Barrayn sees the stylish face coverings as a vehicle for self-expression, or even conversation starters. “In a way you’re still letting people know that you are open to communication,” she says. “What you see in these masks are expressions of existence, and that is powerful.” - Laylah Barrayn for Vogue.com
