Tyler Mitchell '17 (BFA, Kanbar Institute, Film & TV) will premiere Chrysalis on October 6, his first solo exhibition at Gagosian, London. The show explores themes of Black history and Southern identity, highlighting Mitchell as one of the most prolific contemporary creators today.
In a recent New York Times article, the Brooklyn-based photographer discussed the themes and trajectory of his work while photographed by fellow alumnus, Elliott Jerome Brown Jr. '16 (BFA, Photography & Imaging).
“Tyler has, in short order, established himself as one of the defining photographers of his generation,” said the curator, Antwaun Sargent. “He’s exploring the ways in which reality shapes moments of deep pleasure and moments of deep devastation because it’s always there — what it means to be a Black person navigating this contemporary moment.”
