J. Gordon Arkenberg

Gordon Arkenberg works as both a cinematographer and 1st assistant camera in New York City. As a cinematographer his work spans the range from lyrical documentary, psychological thrillers, to experimental work. Within documentary he has traveled the world for the festival favorite The Meaning of Tea, which investigates our relationship to the second most popular drink after water. Gordon has constructed the 3-D camera rig used for the award-winning short film The Viewer, directed by NYU alumnus Graham Reznick. With Reznick, he lensed Shudder's first original show Deadwax.
Gordon has worked regularly as 1st Assistant Camera on Saturday Night Live's Film Unit since Season 42.
Gordon has taught at NYU since 2007 and has focused his time solely on the Science of Cinematography class since 2010.
He is the author of An Introduction to the Science of Cinematography: Fundamentals of Light, Color, and Vision, and Exploring the Science of Cinematography: Tools, Tests, and Measurements. Both books are published by Routledge / Focal Press.
