Julia Proctor

Julia Proctor (she/her) is a theatre maker, educator, community builder, and a widely respected Theatrical Clown specialist who has taught, devised, performed, directed, produced, coached, and mentored in the field.
Julia's the Founding Director of Clown Gym, NYC's home for affordable high quality clown training, innovative performances, and joyful community building. As Director, Julia oversees all strategic vision, programming, and operations, as well as directs, devises, and performs with the company. Julia's also the Co-Founding Producer of PhysFestNYC, New York City's first festival devoted to Physical Theatre.
Julia was Beanie Feldstein’s personal Clown Coach for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl, and has been a Clown Consultant with The Assembly, New York Theatre Workshop, The Mercury Store, and Gallim Dance.
As a member of Actors Equity, she's performed at The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, Round House Theatre, Synetic Theatre, and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, among others.
Julia teaches Physical Acting at NYU Tisch Drama’s New Studio on Broadway specializing in Games, Clown and Shakespeare, and is excited to join the Collaborative Arts BFA program as their first Clown teacher. She's also been on faculty at The New School, Pace University, Middlebury College and the National Theatre Institute.
Julia's training includes Middlebury College (BA), Shakespeare Theatre Company's Academy for Classical Acting (MFA), Ecole Philippe Gaulier, The PIT, and a pedagogical apprenticeship with Christopher Bayes, along with wisdom learned from countless other teachers and artists with whom she's shared a studio.
Julia makes funny feminist theatre and strives to build community around creativity and joy. She grew up in the northwest mountains of Maine and happily calls Manhattan home with her husband and daughter.
