Julia Proctor

Julia Proctor (she/her) is a performer, educator, and producer. Julia is the Founding Director of Clown Gym, which is NYC’s home for affordable clown training, experimental performances, and joyful community building. As the Director of Clown Gym, she oversees all programming, performances, mentorship, and operations, as well as being a teacher and performer for the company. Julia also helped launch and is producing PhysFestNYC, NYC’s first physical theatres festival.

Julia devises and performs her own material, and loves collaborating with artists on smart, funny, and innovative theatre. She’s a proud member of Actor’s Equity and has performed at Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, Round House Theatre, Synetic Theatre, Project Y, PTP, and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, among others. Julia was a founding member of the Funny School of Good Acting’s Commedia Company.

Julia earned her BA from Middlebury College, MFA from Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting at George Washington University, completed the PIT’s Improv Program, and has trained with some of the most prestigious clown teachers in the world including Dody DiSanto, Philippe Gaulier and Chris Bayes, with whom she completed a pedagogical apprenticeship.

In addition to teaching Games, Clown, and Shakespeare at the New Studio on Broadway at NYU Tisch School of Drama, Julia has taught at Middlebury College, Pace University, The National Theatre Institute, and for The National Alliance of Acting Teachers.

Julia was Beanie Feldstein’s personal Clown Coach for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl.
