Sight and Sound Documentary in Berlin

Real life. Real people.

David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed made music here. The start of the Cold War and the end of Communism, began here. Jewish history and the Holocaust are remembered here. The Muslim world resettles here.

Spend six weeks in Berlin, Europe's most vibrant city, uncovering stories and documenting life. Learn the fundamentals of documentary film where eastern and western Europe merge, where history and modernity mingle, and where the old guard and the avant-garde intersect.

Program Overview

This hands-on production course is taught in English by an award-winning filmmaker with more than 20 years of experience making and teaching documentary film. You will learn the foundational techniques of creating a documentary: the interview, archival and narration, and the process, with a cohort of international colleagues and classmates.

Curriculum

Sight and Sound Documentary

IFMTV-UT 80 /IFMTV-GT 280 | 6 units | Instructor: Marco Williams

The course teaches students to look at their world and to develop the ability to create compelling and dramatic stories in which real people are the characters and real life is the plot. Through close study and analysis of feature length and short documentaries, as well as hands on directing, shooting, sound-recording and editing, students rigorously explore the possibilities and the power of non-fiction storytelling for video. The course is a dynamic combination of individual and group production work in which each student will be expected to complete five projects.
