Our Kind of People, Bayeté Ross Smith
Bayeté Ross Smith, a faculty member of the Department of Photography & Imaging at NYU Tisch, is a recipient of the 2020 Meero Grant in partnership with FOTODEMIC. His photography series Our Kind of People –– for which he was awarded the grant –– examines how an individual’s clothing, ethnicity, gender and skin tone can shape our subjective perceptions of identity, value and character.
The Meero Grant supports innovative ideas that challenge conventional storytelling techniques. The grant sponsors artists who make use of innovative methods that impact the collective consciousness.
This year's recipients also include Btihal Remli, Chinula Mandla, Mahé Elipe, Ramin Nazur, Robert Pluma, Sumeja Tulic, and Wanda Von Bremen.
