Julia Wang (BFA, 2016) wrote in to share some recent news and achievements. Community members will remember Julia as a friendly and outgoing presence around Tisch. During her undergraduate career and as a recent graduate, Julia worked with classmate Tess Mayer to develop a successful wedding photography business as well as serving as editor of ISO Magazine, a Teaching Assistant with the Tisch Summer High School Program, and a position at the International Center of Photography.
“Since late February I have been working as an Office Manager at a non-profit called Atlas: DIY in Sunset Park, BK. In a few words that won't do Atlas justice, we're a mix of a community center/safe space, youth programming hub, and legal organization centered on immigrant youth ages 14-24. Our space is also owned, run, and governed by the young people as well. We offer a range of free legal services, from full representation to screenings. "
"I have really loved working with the Atlas team and have learned a lot in the last few months. One of the biggest takeaways has been a confirmation of my initial fledging idea of becoming an immigration lawyer! (Focusing on humanitarian visas). I really love that Atlas is centered around the idea of 'community lawyering,' that we have the responsibility to not just help, but to give people the knowledge and tools they need to know their rights in a system with so many complicated twists and turns. This isn't to say I'm abandoning my documentary photography roots, but rather finding innovative ways to combine the two together down the line.” Julia is currently beginning preparations to apply to law school in order to further this dream.
Additionally, Julia was excited to share that she’s been awarded a Princeton in Asia teaching fellowship in Dalian, China at the Dalian University of Technology. Julia will be teaching freshmen and sophomores English speaking and reading. Although she's sad to leave her job at Atlas: DIY prematurely, she's thrilled about the opportunity to live and work in China.
