DPI Procedure for Non-Majors

Thank you for your interest in Photography and Imaging (PHTI-UT) coursework.

The policies and procedures below pertain only to Non-Photography and Imaging (hereafter “non-major”) students who wish to take PHTI-UT courses at the Washington Square campus.

Not all PHTI-UT courses are open to non-majors. Be sure to view the prerequisites and notes for classes to ensure you are selecting a class open to non-majors.

Non-majors interested in taking PHTI-UT courses must:

  1. Check to ensure the course you want is open to non-majors.
  2. Ensure you have met ANY and ALL prerequisites for the course (Check course descriptions for prerequisites).
  3. Complete the DPI non-major request form. Please be sure to include any relevant course experience in the notes field.

NOTE: Submitting the non-major form places you on an in-house waitlist ONLY, and DOES NOT guarantee enrollment. We STRONGLY urge you to register for other courses during your registration period to ensure you have the schedule you want.

If a course becomes available, you will be notified by the department and enrolled manually after the Open Access date (usually 2-3 weeks after registration begins). DO NOT contact the department to find out your spot on the waitlist.

Non-majors are strictly prohibited from reaching out to our faculty prior to enrolling in a course. Non-majors not enrolled in a course (ex. those on waitlists or with no affiliation to the course) who reach out to faculty will be moved to the bottom of the waitlist.

Photography and Imaging majors are given priority in our coursework. The department reserves the right to manipulate waitlists to the advantage of Photography and Imaging majors.

For instructions on how to register or use functions within Albert, please contact your academic advisor or refer to the Albert Help Guides. NYU undergraduates cannot self-enroll in more than 18 units per Fall or Spring semester.

VERY IMPORTANT: We strongly urge you to set up a swap. Swaps automate the process of getting off a waitlist if a seat becomes available. If you only join a waitlist but do not configure a swap, your chances of getting off the waitlist are virtually nonexistent. If a seat becomes available and you do not have a swap set up, Albert will skip you. You should watch this video to learn how to correctly configure a swap.

For J-Term and Summer courses: Non-majors MUST complete the non-major form to be enrolled in open PHTI-UT courses - provided you have met the course prerequisites or have gained departmental permission. Students will be enrolled manually.

Please note:

  1. The majority of PHTI-UT coursework requires non-refundable fees. These fees are non-refundable after the Add/Drop period. No exceptions will be made, and under no circumstance can the fees be waived.

  2. All photography courses apply toward electives for Non-Photography & Imaging Tisch majors.

  3. The department reserves the right to drop any student who does not attend the first class.
